General George A. Custer and his dogs.
Recently I had the opportunity to sit with a local historian and learn a bit about General George A. Custer and his dogs. I had alway known that Custer was an avid dog lover and that he and his wife Libby (which is where our Libby's name comes from) often traveled with there dogs. Since they never had any children of there own their many dogs became a source of great pride and enjoyment as well as hunting companions on Custer's travels into the Dakotas.

I have been told that this dog is a Setter that Custer named Rose.
(Her face looks a lot like our English Setter Sue)
This picture was made in Virginia during the Civil War. Custer is pictured with a Dog.
Custer was an avid dog lover, as dogs are often nearby in pictures of Custer. It was rare to find dogs in early photographs because the subjects were required to hold perfectly still for several minutes.
