- INNISHFREE LABRADOR BREEDING GOALS -

Helm's Point Doctor and Kelly's Libby are both built to be strong smooth runners. Point Doctor is especially known for his smooth gait and his ability to trot faster then most hunting labs can gallop. Both Point Doctor and Libby have been bred to produce long legs for increased endurance and ability to get through thick cover in the field. Both dogs are above average intelligence and have that sweet loving disposition that continues to make Labradors the most popular dog breed around. Both are natural pointers that also have the RARE "Fox Red" yellow color variation that is very unique and distinctive for those that want something unique and special in their next dog. Strong hunting drive, smooth gait, endurance in the field, sweet loving disposition, and a natural point are the goals Innishfree Puppies has for this litter and all of our labrador pups.

From what we are hearing back from our puppy owners we are certainly hitting the mark!

Mamma Libby tending her new babies born 12/21/05!

There were 2 Girls & 5 Boys all healthy and doing well.

- 1 Week Old -

Each morning, during the first two weeks and then weekly thereafter, the puppies are weighed-in to make sure that each puppy is thriving and gaining weight. During this time they also get their sharp nails filed. Then while the puppies are all nestled together in a warm basket the whelping box is carefully and thoroughly cleaned. When the morning housekeeping chores are done Mamma Libby settles everyone back in, feeds them, and then it's nape time again. At this early stage, the puppies spend about ninety percent of their time sleeping, and the other 10 percent eating. Their instinctive reflexes are to crawl, seek warmth and nurse, and they can right themselves if placed upside down. They need stimulation for urination and defecation, and constant care from Mamma Libby. This is a time of rapid development of their central nervous systems. Their eyes and ears are still closed but their vocal chords are already well developed.

Libby Puppies

Eyes Open & Walking

The puppies are beginning to open their eyes during this week and they are also starting to take their first few wobbly steps. At first they just take a couple of steps and then roll over on their side. As they build up strength in their legs, they take more and more steps until they are totally mobile. That's when the fun really starts!

The puppies have been growing like weeds! The puppies have teeth, and they're learning how to use them!
They are also moving around in the whelping box very efficiently now, even standing and urinating and defecating on their own. They are starting to interact together a lot more.
They are more aware of each other, and have begun to play together.
WHAT FUN!

"Playing is hard work...
we need a nap!"

The Socialization Period, 4 - 12 weeks, is a critical period in the development of young puppies. It is vital at this stage that the puppies spend lots of time exploring their environment and adjusting to new situations, as well as learning to socialize within their canine and human pack. During this period the pups are exposed to bird wings and gun fire to lay the foundation for future hunting trips! Weaning also begins this week. Then after a good play session it's time for a nap.

Bird & Gun Conditioning Begins!

Busy and active week!

Let's Play!

Forest Green Male

Standing Tall!

wings

I got it!

At this stage of development, group activity and ruff and tumble play has begun. We have introduced pheasant wings to the pups this week and as you can see they really enjoy the activity. They have also begun to establish a dominance order within the pack as they learn how to play nice. This is a time of rapid growth and development as they continue to explore their world and develope relationships with each other and their human pack leaders. And, they are all on solid food (getting into Mother's when ever possible) and starting to go outside to do their business as well as continuing paper training.

Gun Conditioning!
No FEAR!

We are shooting guns around the pups almost every day
(weather permitting) during their outdoor exercise times.

Bird and gun conditioning continues this week!

- 6 Weeks Old -

February 01, 2006

This week the puppies had their first bath and each of them really enjoyed the water. They also had their first visit to the vet for shots and de-worming. The vet said that all of the pups are healthy and doing GREAT! We are continuing with gun conditioning and bird play. And, as you can see they are eager to hunt!

Puppies play hard, and they play a lot but the
good news is a tired puppy is a good puppy!

Pup #2 - Red (Boy)

Dark Green is a very regal and distinctive puppy with a bit of white on his chest. He is full of strength, energy and enthusiasm. With the right training this boy is ready for long hours in the field with you!

Ready to work and play with you!

It has been our privilege and joy to care for your new puppy during its first few weeks of life. We have had the pleasure of playing and learning along with your new pup as they have grown from blind, deaf and helpless newborns to happy, jumping, bundles of enthusiasm. But, the time has come to say goodbye. If you are planning on picking your pup up at Innishfree then they are now ready to go to their new home. If you are having your pup shipped then they will be ready for the trip next week at 8 weeks of age. We hope that as your new pup grows and develops into the wonderful dogs, that we believe they will be, that you will include us from time in your lives with pictures and updates.
