Feeding Schedule
The puppies have been on a “free range diet” (food available most of the time). We fill the bowls in the morning and again at dinner time. As long as they are getting plenty of exercise then weight should not be an issue. You may also want them to sit before putting the bowl down and from time to time while they are eating pick the bowl up so that they continue to not show any aggression to others messing with their food.
- Feed: We use only high quality dog foods with a protein content of 20% and fat content of 20% or as close to these numbers as we can find. Currently our dogs are all getting Diamond Dog food but we have also used Nutro and Nutripet with good results.
- Mega C: Follow the instructions on package and Dr. Belfield’s book.
- ArthyDex: Add 1/2 tsp per day for puppies and increase as they grow per package instructions.
- Yogurt: Add 1 tsp plan yogurt to food it helps to keep the natural digestive enzymes in their system. This has multiple benefits for your dog including helping prevent bad breath, gas, and itchy skin.
- Lard: Add 1/2 tsp of lard to the feed especially during hunting season. We keep it in a microwave safe measuring cup and then melt it which makes mixing in food very easy.
Daily Schedule at Innishfree
Your pup has been spending the night in his/her crate lined with newspapers by 6-7 weeks. For most of the pups this also means that they are able to keep their crate dry and clean through the night. Puppies certainly don't believe in burning daylight and are often up and ready to take on the day by 6:30am Once we are up the pups go outside and we prepare their breakfast (see above). Then they spend most of the day (weather permitting) outside playing with a variety of toys, their litter mates and the other dogs. After we get our breakfast Michael takes the big girls for their walk in the Black Hills and the kids and I take the pups (6+ weeks) for a shorter walk. When we get back they are all pretty much ready for a nap and most prefer the chase lounge.

NAP TIME
We like to work with the pups after lunch when both we and the pups are fresh. This is when we do some leash and basic command training, temperament testing, as well as trips to town for vet appointments, puppy therapy at the nursing home or a swim at the lake. Around 3pm all the dogs let Michael know that it is time for their afternoon walk. And, once again we take the pups for a shorter walk exploring the hills, rock outcropping, mud puddles, and more. When we get back they are ready for a fresh bowl of food & water and then more playtime in the yard. The pups all come in and our tucked into their crates around 9pm.
This schedule should give you a general idea of what we do but each day is different and weather and school / work activities are always a consideration so afternoon activities are flexible.
Training Classes
Sign your puppy up for a puppy kindergarten class or CGC Canine Good Citizen or Obedience Class when older or a hunting class. This is a great way to bond with your puppy, socialize them, and get them started out on being a good citizen in your home and in your community. Classes can be found through 4-H Clubs, Kennel Clubs, Hunt Clubs, pet stores and individual trainers.
Pictures and Stories
We love to hear about how your puppy is doing and pictures of you with your puppy or your puppy on the hunt is always fun to see! So, don’t be shy send those pictures and stories to us.
Questions
If you have any questions or concerns please be sure to give us a call. I may not have the answer but I will do my best to find it for you.
Enjoy your puppy for many years to come!
